The Home Care Association of Washington Announces
One of the privleges given to the President (of HCAW) each year is the selection of one person for the Wizard Awars. This person is recognized for outstanding and remarkable service to the Association and to the home care industry in our State. The individual is designated as the "Wizard", and is given possession of the Wizard traveling trophy for the year that follows.
This year President
Donna Goodwin presented the Wizard Award to Susan "Sam" Miller. As a
private duty owner, she is among her peers with an uphill battle to define what
they do and defend a quality business. Sam has done this with HCAW representing
private duty and with her business. Her business CareForce, has received the
finalist award for the people's choice for a place of employment.
In addition she has
embraced and implemented the Transitions program for patients with a coaching
approach to care. She was one of the first in the industry to embrace Eric
Coleman's transition work.
Sam started her
service to HCAW on the Board in 2005, as a business owner of a Private Duty
agency we welcomed her insight and prospective. She has contributed to our
advocacy efforts, education programs, member recruiting and retention,
newsletter articles, and now she will go on to share her many talents with the
Alliance Board. She has been a great board member and a great voice for Private
Duty providers. She will be missed as an HCAW Board member and has done a
phenomenal job on the 2011 conference committee.

Jessie S. - CNA - CareForce
Jessie has elevated the stature of
live-in caregiving in the Puget Sound area during her 6-year tenure at
CareForce. Live-in caregiving is a specialty. Caregivers need to leave their
homes for 3-4 days at a time and give over their lives to the client’s needs
for that period of time. Jessie does this with compassion, empathy, and an
attention to detail that makes every client and/or family feel special and like
they are the most important person in the universe. She is truly a gem and a
wonder at her ability to give care 3-4 days per week all year-round.
HCAW Support Staff of the Year
Elizabeth K. - CNA - CareForce
Elizabeth has been a home care specialist or staffer at
CareForce for 4 years and was a caregiver for 1 year prior to her staffing.
During her tenure as a staffer, she has learned the skills of direct and clear
communication that make her a favorite with clients. While Elizabeth is part of
a team, she is a general in her own right of being able to keep everybody
happy: nurses, caregivers, clients, and other operations staff. She has the
ability to develop balanced teams of caregivers when a client requires more
than one caregiver, negotiate with RN’s and MSW’s regarding the right caregiver
with the right client, understand the nuance in the needs of the clients,
client’s families, and caregivers and bring her understanding to the care
planning process to create respectful relationships with very choosy clients.
She is truly amazing every day that she brings her skills to CareForce

Five To Be Honored for Good Business in Snohomish County
2009 Everett Herald
LYNNWOOD -- The South Snohomish County Chamber of Commerce will honor five businesses and organizations for their quality and community service during a March 25 luncheon. The organization's 17th annual Business Excellence Awards will be presented from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lynnwood Convention Center.
"Each of the 2009 Business Excellence Award recipients demonstrate leadership and a continued commitment to our communities through best business practices and local stewardship," said Jean Hales, chamber chief executive and president.
The honorees include:
CareForce. The health care business, which offers home care, geriatric care and skilled nursing services for older adults, was honored for exceptional service, family values and professional ethics. The company, which has about 100 employees, is known for community service, best business practices and improving care for vulnerable people, chamber officials said.
Electronic Business Machines. Owner Dick Schlosser was recognized for quality customer service and for "loyal support of numerous community organizations," including the chamber and the Rotary Club.
Sterling Savings Bank. The bank was cited for its high level of financial services to its customers and to managing a safe and sound financial institution. Chamber officials said it also believes in improving communities it serves.
Volunteers of America. The agency was honored for developing partnerships between the community and businesses to help people and solve complex service issues. It also was noted for working to empower diverse groups and to help individuals and families succeed.
Snohomish County Business Journal. The monthly business journal, among The Herald group of companies, was lauded for its dedication to "providing quality and relevant news to the local community."
